Step #4: Meeting the Mentor
Welcome 2017! We’ve arrived in the new year with all the challenges and opportunities it brings to each and all of us on every level. Like many of you, I’m sure, I take the time to review and reflect on the year that’s on it’s way out and consciously create intentions for the one showing up. This normally looks like me smack dab in the middle of a crazy quilt of poster board, construction paper, spreadsheets and assorted writing utensils spread out on the living room floor. And during this time of reflection there’s acknowledgment for what:
- Intentions/goals were accomplished
- Ended or concluded
- Challenges faced, both external and internal
- New connections and collaborations
- Grace was received, mostly through synchronicities (i.e. Miracles)
- I had immense gratitude for, and
- What knowledge and/or wisdom was gained….
….and here’s where my gratitude expands. I begin to reminisce about times in my life when I was headed down a new, challenging path and truly needed something or someone to show the way. And, viola, grace. I got what I needed, even if I didn’t realize it at the time. So, even when I didn’t ask, the Mentor appeared….and did what they do best: listen, teach, inspire, challenge, encourage and hold space for the breakthrough. After all, a good Mentor has faith in us before we do.
In the Hero’s Journey, meeting the Mentor is a pivotal step in cementing our commitment to keep moving down that unknown path to our desired destination. By the very definition of the word Mentor, they are “wise advisors” who have experience navigating the path before you. Sometimes it’s a brief encounter, maybe even with a stranger or an experience, that shakes us up and leaves us with “new eyes” for the world and ourselves. At other times, it’s actually what we are “forced” to learn by an unexpected loss, frustrating circumstance out of our control or difficult relationship that pushes us to stand up for ourselves or others in an uncomfortable way. Mostly, though, the learnings come through our relationship with a wiser person, whose intent is to help us see things anew, walk with us on the path and, ultimately, bring out the wisdom that is already inside of us. It is a sacred journey, whether it seems like a surprise wake up call, a harsh challenge or a supportive wizard. And it leads us to the next level in whatever we need to achieve in our lives and in ourselves.
Take a few moments to remember and to honor the Mentors in your life, in the last year and the years before. Remember what a true blessing it all turned out to be. Then make sure you honor the wisdom inside of you as well. Sometimes, that is who we are looking for!
Light and Love,
